Ask a question about this product

Using an original concept of how prominence works in the phonology, this work makes a systematic comparison of the suprasegmental systems of the Anglo-West African Creole languages spoken in the Caribbean, South America and West Africa. The original nature of the theoretical approach produces new and revealing analyses of the hybrid suprasegmental systems of these languages. The author examines how enslaved speakers of West African language modified the tonal systems they originally used in their native languages to accommodate the mass of new vocabulary, mainly from English, with which they were faced in plantation societies in the Americas.
